About my approach:
I work collaboratively and actively with my clients to help them to make positive changes in their lives. I tailor my approach to each individual, drawing most from cognitive behavioral and mindfulness and acceptance based approaches.
Treatment often involves teaching psychological skills to deal with painful thoughts and feelings effectively, so that they have much less impact over you and your life. Treatment also involves helping you to clarify what is truly important and meaningful to you (aka your values) and using your values as a compass to help you to create a rich, full, and meaningful life.
A little bit of background:
I am a licensed psychologist with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from American University. I have been fortunate to have acquired a wide variety of clinical experiences over the last 18 years. As a postdoctoral fellow I worked with maltreated children and their families at the Family Stress Center in Los Angeles. After relocating to New York City in 2002 I started a private practice. Through Project Liberty, I also provided therapy for people who were impacted by the traumatic events of 9/11. From 2002-2011, I worked as a psychologist at the Family Court Mental Health Services in Brooklyn, conducting evaluations of adolescents and adults and providing expert testimony in court; I also served as Associate Clinic Director for the last 3 years.
I value learning and frequently attend professional conferences and trainings to keep abreast of the field and to enhance my own knowledge and skills. My postgraduate training has include trainings in ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy); coaching training through Mentor Coach (an organization geared towards training mental health professionals in coaching, with a positive psychology orientation); and training in assessing and treating depression and anxiety during pregnancy and after birth.
